Aida returns to Arena di Verona
On Sunday 1 July, at 9.15 pm, on the open stage of the 85th Opera Festival at the Arena di Verona, Aida returns in a new production that had its first night one week ago. Giampiero Solari, as director, and Sergio Tramonti, as stage and costume designer, have brought a new and engaging interpretation to Verdi’s masterpiece, immediately winning over the public. Using such scenic elements as strong colours, waves of light on the age-old steps (symbolising the waters of the Nile) and the projection of a large pyramid in the sky, it is as if they wanted to pull in the audience and make it a co-principal in the plot. There is certainly no lack of dramatic power in Aida’s staging. In the title role is the Chinese soprano Hui He, who is now playing the role of the Ethiopian slave and she has impressed the audience with the timbre, compass and interpretative quality of her voice. Beside her, in the role of Radames, is the American Frank Porretta, who is making his first appearance in the Arena. Marianne Cornetti is Amneris, Ambrogio Maestri wears the robes of Amonasro and Giorgio Surian takes the part of Ramfis. Duccio Dal Monte (The King), Carlo Bosi (Messenger) and Antonella Trevisan (Priestess) complete the cast.
Aida will have repeat performances on 5, 8, 15, 17 22, 25 and 28 July and on 5, 12, 15, 19, 23, 26, and 28 August, before the final performance on 1 September.
